When you visit Portobelo in the Colon Province of Panama today, you will see the cannoned husk of a fort that was built on the Atlantic shore of the Northeastern coast of Panama. Portobelo was the area known historically as Puerto Bello, which translates as ‘beautiful port’; from the time when it provided storm shelter for Christopher Columbus in 1502… and he named it on his charts.

Puerto Bello was a bay harbor town of Spanish treasure customs houses full of gold, pearls and newly minted silver reals, protected by several forts and many cannons to guard the riches collected by the Spanish from Central and South America natives for hundreds of years.

In the world paradigm of the 17th century, the accepted means of conducting naval war was to overcome adversaries at sea with all the ships available. Captain Henry Morgan operated in the Atlantic as a sea-raider authorized by the English King’s Letter of Marque, rather than as the outlaw pirate, who he appeared to be to the Spanish.

In a daring attack the Welsh Admiral Henry Moore and his ships crews overcame Puerto Bello’s defenses in June, 1666. The sea raiders held the citizens for ransom and overwhelmed the 3,000 Spanish troops who raced through the rainforest from Panama City, to come to the aid of the guards of the treasures stored there. But instead, Morgan and his men arrived on their own docks in Port Royal, Jamaica with 250,000 ‘pieces of eight’ the Spanish had stockpiled the silver for and minted in the Americas.

The new treasure on Panama’s Caribbean Coast is near Portobelo and is called Bala Beach Resort. Maria Chiquita Beach where Bala Beach Resort is being constructed is a community of less than 1800 people, located only 3.25 miles (6 km.) up the road from the today’s little town of Portobelo. It is your opportunity to find a treasure. You can position yourself as a Bala Beach investor – in the strongest equity building position – at the beginning stages of a beachfront resort development.
