Wake up to the sound of birds and drinking a fresh cup of coffee harvested in a nearby plantation. Enjoy the day among nature in a town dubbed the “valley of flowers and eternal spring”. Stop at the local store to chit chat with lovely locals and expatriates who occasionally spend their cheap holidays in Lanzarote. Marvel at the cloud covered mountains that surround the region.

Delight with the fresh water the river provides. At night, choose from the variety of great restaurants, or stay home and cook a nutritious meal with fresh ingredients picked a few kilometers away. Sound too good to be true? Welcome to Boquete!

Boquete, a district of the Chiriqui Province, in the western end of Panama, covers about 350 square miles and its altitude ranges from 800 to 3,000 meters above sea level. The weather is what many people consider perfect. Yearly temperatures vary from 67 to 75 Fahrenheit, with marked dry and rainy seasons. Bajareque, a light and cool drizzle brought by the north winds off the mountains, frequently caresses the locals.

Boquete is very accessible. It is 60 km from the border with Costa Rica, 30 minutes from David (the capital of Chiriqui) and around 6 hours from Panama City (there is daily flight service from Panama City and Bocas del Toro to David).

Boquete is a true melting pot of ethnicity, with native Indians, Europeans, North Americans and Spaniards among its 15,000 residents. Since its founding in 1911, Boquete has attracted a large and varied group of immigrants, including Yugoslavians, Swedish, Swiss and Germans. For this reason, Boquete’s farms and houses are reminiscent of the architectural styles of those countries.

Clean water, fresh air (some say it even cures asthma), agricultural abundance, low cost of living and its people are what make Boquete the Valley of the Eternal Rainbow.

Cerro Azul

Los Altos de Cerro Azul is located just 1/2 an hour from Panama’s Tocumen International Airport and on a clear day in Altos de Cerro Azul you have a phenomenal view of both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The project of Altos de Cerro Azul is built at an altitude of about 950 meters or 2,500 to 2,700 feet above sea level with temperatures that range between 70 degrees and 80 degrees – at night it gets very cool and you will need a blanket to keep yourself warm.

Altos de Cerro Azul is gated and has 24 hour security, a country club with pool, tennis courts and restaurant. Other parts of the Cerro Azul area which are non-gated. In the surrounding forests you will find exotic birds and wildlife unique to Panama as well as a series of trails that will take you through one of the oldest cloud forests in the Western Hemisphere.

In the cloud forest it is possible to see rare palm trees that are unique to only 2 other countries in the world: Ivory Coast and Haiti. No one knows how the palms were able to spread from the African coast to the Caribbean and then to the bottom of Central America – this is an enigma that is currently being studied by the Smithsonian Institute in Panama.

The flora and fauna are also unique and abundant in Cerro Azul and the following wildlife is not uncommon to the area: foxes, white-faced capuchin, ant-eater, sloth, squirrels, coatimundi, agouti, peccary and white-tailed deers, howler monkey, red spider monkey, jaguar, olingo, two-toed sloth, ocelot, jagarundi, harpy eagle and guan.

In addition to the stunning natural beauty of Altos de Cerro Azul, are also several first world amenities which include: access to high-speed satellite Internet, Direct T.V. and modern electricity and telephone services as well as the best drinking water in Panama as per a recent study conducted by the University of Panama. On the principal road from the airport to Altos de Cerro Azul is a modern shopping center with everything from fast food shops, to supermarkets, to video stores and building supply outlets.

Cerro Azul is in area of Panama that is virtually undiscovered except by locals who frequent the various spas and restaurants.

Description courtesy of panamarealtor.com

El Valle de Anton

A picturesque mountain town just two hours from Panama City, El Valle is a preferred second home destination for Panamanians and for foreigners who want to be in the mountains, but close enough to the city.

Pamanainfo.com describes it as “El Valle de Anton, known simply as El Valle has a geologically unique setting, it’s nestled in the second largest volcano crater in the world. A five by three mile crater created when a volcano blew its top off five million years ago. The result was a lovely steep valley surrounded by jagged mountain peaks and rich volcanic soil that gives way to flowers and verdant forest as a result. El Valle also boasts a near perfect year round spring climate.”

The area is growing with new boutique hotels, gourmet restaurants, and a complete eco-tourism feel with activities such as river rafting, canopy tours, bicycle and hiking tours. Famous for its crafts, El Valle’s market is a place where Panamanians and foreigners who live in El Valle and the nearby beach areas go to spend the day shopping for plants and crafts.

Altos del Maria

Altos del Maria is an exclusive gated mountain residential community conveniently located at just 1 hour and 20 minutes (113 km – 70 miles) from Panama City and only 25 minutes away (25 km – 15.5 miles) from the Pacific coast beaches with their world-class golfing and shopping.

The development is placed in 7000+ acre property so beautiful that many areas have the look and feel of a national park. Attractions include panoramic mountain, valley, green belt and Pacific Ocean views, a near perfect spring climate year round (75º F – 24 Cº), a first-class infrastructure including miles of paved roads, vast common areas, waterfalls, rivers, hiking trails, observation decks, parks, lookout points, flowers and trees everywhere.

Altos del Maria has a range of prices to meet every need. Spacious residential lots and houses are available in subdivisions with varied altitudes, views and climates.

Boquete

The town of Boquete in the Chiriqui Province of Panama has a perfect spring-like climate at an elevation of about 3,500 ft., with clean air, clear water, unspoiled nature and a welcoming community. Boquete offers much for the avid bird watcher, the elusive Quetzal is relatively easy to spot.

The valley of Boquete is filled with flowers and gourmet coffee plantations on its hills and at times the smell of roasting coffee sends wonderful aromas through the town. The town harbors quaint café’s and restaurants, as well as shops and antique stores. Boquete offers an amazing gastronomical offer, including the Small Leading Hotel of the World, The Panamonte Inn & Spa, whose chef Charlie Collins is renown in Panama.

As of 2008, the town of Boquete had a population of 600 American retirees. Dozens of Americans live in the real estate and hotel development, Valle Escondido, an enclosed residential area which has a nine-hole golf course, convenience store, high speed internet, and many other amenities.

Volcan and Cerro Punta

Volcan’s temperature and scenery is similar to that of Boquete, but there is a smaller community and the prices for real estate are more affordable than Boquete. There is visibly a lot more breathing space in this location. It is very close to the magnificent Baru Volcano and many houses have a view of the dormant volcano.

Volcan has a lush green, rolling mountain scenery that reminds you of Switzerland. In fact there is an area called Nueva Suiza (new Switzerland) on the road to Cerro Punta. In the setting sun, the evening clouds are tinged with reds and pinks, contrasting the deep emerald greens on the pine covered slopes of the surrounding hills. Anybody with a love for life and beauty would have to conclude that Volcan is truly one of the world’s special places.

Volcan will surprise you. The town is small with a population of just 10,200 (2000 census), but the facilities are amazing. On the main street alone, there are four large supermarkets, four gas stations, five hardware stores, three bakeries and more than twenty places to eat.

Article by Lee Zeltzer, Boquete expatriate resident and owner of http://www.boqueteguide.com/

Far from Panama City is the town of Boquete Panama. Getting to Boquete is a 45 minute airplane ride or six to seven hours on the road. Bus service from Panama will get you to David and still you have an hour more on a bus to Boquete. Why then to tourists flock to Boquete Panama?

There are two distinctly different groups of non Panamanian tourists visiting Boquete. I say non Panamanian because large numbers of native residents also take holidays in Boquete. The visitor groups are both young and old, backpackers and retirees.

Young people visit Boquete for it’s exciting outdoor and social activities. Boquete is the center for white water rafting in Panama along the Costa Rican border. A place where you leap from class four to class five rapids in a continuous stretch of river that separates the two countries. Boquete is the home of a Boquete Tree Trek a zip line experience that propels your adrenaline levels up as you zip down through an old growth forest. Boquete is less than one hour from fishing opportunities, snorkeling opportunities, diving opportunities and provides a safe secure home base to explore the highlands of Panama.

People who are less inclined to the outdoors will find Boquete is a haven for retired English speakers from around the world. There are many people in Boquete who are bilingual. Every Tuesday the English community in Boquete has a networking meeting and farmers market. This event is held in the new Boquete Community Players (BCP) Community Center. The BCP fields a wide range of plays, concerts and other events attracting the English speaking community.

There are wonderful opportunities for touring the lush mountains, visiting some of Boquete’s world famous coffee farms and seeing the entire process of growing and preparing the worlds best coffee. Then after a day of exploring visit one on Boquete’s fine restaurants. You can enjoy simple local food and have dinner for under $3 or enjoy some of the best cuisine in Panama at prices you might pay at McDonalds in the US.

Finally don’t forget the night life. Young or old you can find your niche at night. Be it partying hard till 4 am at La Cabana or just a relaxed evening at the fabulous Panamonte Bar in the Panamonte Hotel.

After a few days in Boquete you will discover why people of all ages visit here as tourists and never leave.

CITY LIFE

Panama City

Panama City is an affordable cosmopolitan location for those who prefer city life. With a skyline reminiscent of Miami, the high rise buildings tower above the ocean or rain forest. Panama is one of the least expensive places in the world to live in a First World City. High class restaurants, first class hotels and fast food outlets, are here for all tastes and expense.

David City

Located in the province of Chiriqui, the City of David is the third largest city in Panama. A tranquil city life, unlike the rush of the metropolitan Panama City. A city that has much potential to grow, especially when the international airport is built.

The weather in David is similar to that of Panama City for people who prefer more tropical climates, but still allows you quick escapes since it is only 45 minutes away from Boquete, 1 hour and 15 minutes from Volcan, and 2 hours away from Boca Chica Beach.

BEACH AREAS

Pacific Beaches – Chame, Gorgona, Coronado, Punta Barco, Rio Mar, and Playa Blanca

Only 45 minutes away from Panama City, we can find Chame, which is the first of many small beach towns in Panama’s Pacific Coast. Stretching out all the way to Juan Hombron, this area is being known as the “Gold Coast” because of the white sand you find in the beaches.

The epicenter of this area is Coronado, where there are several strip malls, with all the modern city commodities, such as a supermarket, banks, restaurants, and construction stores. This area is rapidly growing because it offers you the possibility of living in the beach and yet being less than one hour away from Panama City.

Housing in this area varies from single residency houses, to very modern condos with all the facilities, to private gated communities. There are plans very soon to built an international airport in Rio Hato, which is a landing strip the Americans built in Panama, when they still had the military bases.

Pearl Islands

The Pearl Islands have managed to remain unspoiled, beautiful and virtually untouched over the years. Its water’s abound with wildlife such as: sea turtles, whales, dolphins, a huge array of game fish such as marlin, tuna, wahoo and sailfish to name a few. In the jungles of the Pearl Islands you can find such wildlife as, parrots, toucans, deer, iguanas, monkeys, agouties, and anteaters.

The Pearl Islands, was also home of two seasons of the Reality TV Show “Survivor”.

Bocas del Toro

This isolated region of Panama has only recently been discovered by international travelers. It is for this reason that much of the island chain remains in untouched splendor.

Located on Isla Colon is the province’s capital city, Bocas Del Toro. This was the headquarters for United Fruit Company at the turn of the century and was an important shipping and receiving port.

Over the last few years the entire province has seen the beginnings of a tourist boom, with a number of middle range hotels and restaurants being opened in and around Bocas town. The town now boasts of three different PADI dive shops, many different styles of restaurants, a deep sea fishing outfit, numerous sailboat and catamaran cruises, mountain bike and moped rentals and a lot of fabulous seafood.

Pedasi

Pedasi, a small quite town in the peninsula de Azuero, known as the ‘cradle’ of Panamanian folklore, is the ideal place for a retiree seeking to experience the joys of small town Panama. Women sowing polleras- Panama’s national dress, men working on rustic pottery, the remnants of Panama’s colonial past are quite visible in this small town major historical national monuments are close by such as: The Cabildo House, the Santa Librada Church and the San Atanasio Church.

A small community of foreigners live in this area still, but many have plans to develop the area and a foundation was recently created Pedasi.org to promote positive growth. Pedasi has amazing beaches, with a turtle watching season in September and is a well known for its fishing, surfing and diving. Great place for any water fan.

Discovery of gold in 1848 increased traffic greatly. In 1847 a group of New York financiers organized the Panama Railroad Company. This company secured an exclusive concession from Colombia allowing construction of a crossing, which might be by road, rail, river, or a combination. After surveys, a railroad was chosen and a new contract so specifying was obtained in 1850. The railroad track followed generally the line of the present canal. The first through train from the Atlantic to the Pacific side ran on the completed track on January 28,1855.

The gold rush traffic, even before the completion of the railroad, restored Panama’s prosperity. Between 1848 and 1869, about 375,000 persons crossed the isthmus from the Atlantic to the Pacific and 225,000 crossed in the opposite direction. Prices for food and services were greatly inflated, producing enormous profits from meals and lodging.

The railroad also created a new city and port at the Atlantic terminus of the line. The town that immediately sprang up to accommodate the railroad offices, warehouses, docks and shops and to lodge both railroad workers and passengers soon became and remains, the second largest in the country. United States citizens named it Aspinwall, after one of the founders of the Panama Railroad Company, but the Panamanians christened it Colón, in honor of Columbus. Both names were used for many years, but because the Panamanians insisted that no such place as Aspinwall existed and refused to deliver mail so addressed, the name Colón prevailed.

The French Panama Canal Company purchased the railroad in 1880 to assist in their attempt to build the Panama Canal. In 1904, the United States purchased the New Panama Canal Company’s assets from the French, including the railroad. The United States rebuilt and operated the railroad until 1979, when it was transferred to Panama under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty. In 1998, Panama privatized the railroad and awarded a 50-year concession to the Panama Canal Company, a joint venture of Kansas City Southern and Mi-Jack Products, to rebuild and operate the line. They’ve spent upward of $60 million on the renovation–and it shows.

Indeed, this railroad has quite a history and for the round-trip price of $35, offers quite a ride. The passenger cars are old Amtrak units, rebuilt in New Orleans and rigged out with paneled walls, wooden shutters, plush carpet and faux-leather seats. The train travels a route parallel to the canal so, at different points during the one-hour trip, you’ll happen upon signals, waterways, reservoirs, pristine rainforest and rolling countryside. The main purpose of the track is to resume the rail transport of containers from coast to coast. It reduces the often 12-hour transit time by ship to a mere 90 minutes.

The train is also a good way to commute from Panama City to Colon and an absolute bargain compared to the cost of a car service or a taxi ($120 for the round trip). The new “reborn” railroad began operations in 2000. Going from Panama City to Colon, you will board the “Executive Express” at the Corozal train station for the historical ride alongside the Panama Canal. The station in Panama, located near the Balboa Port, is nearing completion but the Colon terminal is still under construction as of early 2006. The first train departs Panama City at 7 a.m. and the last leaves Colon at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at either station or on the train.

Boquete used to be Chiriqui province’s best kept secret. Today, more and more people are discovering the practicality of moving to Panama and settling in the “Land of Eternal Spring.” There are numerous reason’s why Boquete in Chiriqui is now one of the worlds top retirement destinations. Young and seasoned adventurers alike choose Boquete.

Low cost of living – if you live in North America or any comparable country, your savings will go a long way if you choose to settle in Panama. Don’t let that mislead you though. Low cost of living doesn’t equate to low STANDARD of living. This leads us to . .

High standard of living – Panama’s infrastructure is first world class. Roads are well-maintained, transportation is efficient, modern conveniences are available too. It’s like living in a first world country but spending just a small fraction of the cost.

Dollar economy – Panama uses the dollar as it’s currency. They do mint coins called the balboa but they look like US coins and are valued exactly the same. This means easy transition and you won’t have difficulty estimating how much everything costs.

Discounts for retirees – retirees enjoy huge discounts in Panama. Senior citizens get discounts on transportation, entertainment, hotel stay, restaurant meals, prescription medicines, home loans and more.

Tax free income – if your source of income is from outside Panama, then you don’t have to pay a single cent for taxes.

Zero property tax for twenty years – foreigners are given a tax break of 20 years on properties. That’s right, you won’t have to pay property taxes for 20 long years if you choose to own a property in Chiriqui.

Great Coffee – Boquete in Chiriqui is home to one of the most sought after coffee in the world. The right combination of soil type, climate and coffee strain result in the perfect cup of Boquete coffee.

Perfect Balance – Living in Boquete in Chiriqui will allow you to experience a perfect balance between enjoying nature in its raw beauty and also having access to modern conveniences. Chiriqui has access to both highland wonders and beautiful marine locations.

The cost of real estate in Boquete and nearby towns is still relatively affordable. But that may not be true just a few years from now. The price of real estate in Boquete and towns in Chiriqui in general is rising at a sure rate and investing in a piece of property in Chiriqui this early is really a smart move.

It is located about forty five minutes to the West of Panama city, via the InterAmercian Highway which is one of the best in Central America when it comes to quality.

Coronado’s entrance is marked by several shopping malls with a subway sandwich shop, various stores and an unusual grocery store called El Rey, which would not be out of its place in any developed American city.

Coronado’s beach is as nice as the beach in Santa Clara. The water in the beach of Coronado is however not that friendly because it has high rising tides and raving currents which could be fatal. Most of the coastal areas around the beach are used for real estate developments. Tall condo buildings are also dotted on the shores of Coronado these days.

The single family homes in Coronado vary from sizes and quality; you can get one from a very low end to even a super deluxe. There are several private mansions as well which are luxurious but unfortunately a very few of them are for rent or sale. The roads near the beach are well maintained.

Coronado real estate is a bit expensive compared to any other beach area in Panama. This is because it will be a hot spot in the near future. But many people feel that by constructing various new similar looking condo towers, Coronado has a chance to prosper even more. The market advantage of low supply in the area caused most of the real estate developments in Coronado to prosper. Several hotels are being built to delight the foreign visitors as well. The entrance of Coronado is guarded by a few securities and visitors have to check in while the residents can just swipe through. The guards are friendly and not choosy to avoid any sort of discrimination.

Coronado is still a home for lots of fisherman who trade on the beach area. As a residence of the place, you can easily purchase fresh lobsters and sea bass directly from the source. Even some of the local restaurants and hotels acquire fish this way and cater to the upper classes. Punta Barco and Punta Barco Autentico is Coronado’s closest neighbor to the west. You can also discover poor farmers and vendors selling small bags of beans for as less as fifty cents on the highway. Coronado is also known for its weekend trips as well as a nearby tourist attraction. On many occasions and holidays, the locals and the foreigners chill with beers in the streets and relax on the Coronado beach. They also enjoy poolside barbeques and spend quality time on the beach. You can also enjoy the outstanding views from the towers; the front has to offer beautiful ocean views while the rear has the jungle.

To summarize, Coronado is a good spot for investment as well as a good travel destination. The infrastructure is much developed compared to any other beach towns in the nation. Panamanian makes up a good portion of the local residents. Most foreigners consider it as a developed beach town. The best part is that even if you do not like it, you will not regret as you do not require much time reaching it. If you are a real estate investor, you can benefit by investing in this place as there is a terrific opportunity to purchase at a low price and sell high in future. It is said that certain projects such as Coronado Country Club often sell out most of their units before any construction took place!

Azuero is also home to Panama’s best Carnival celebration. A colorful, wild yet friendly event in Las Tablas. Nearly all the exquisite hand embroidered “Pollera” dresses Panamanian women wear, done for festivals and parties are made by local artisans in Azuero as well as most “Panama Hats“.

Azuero is also the site of Panama’s richest archeological excavations with remains dating back 11,000 years, the earliest found in Central America.

Modern life has very much arrived in the principal cities of Las Tablas and Chitre. The towns are connected to the Panamerican highway, by the excellent National Highway (Carretera Nacional). Here the modern and the traditional worlds comfortably mix. You’ll see cowboys on horseback and businessman in SUVs talking intensely on cell phones.

Chitre in the Province of Herrera is the place to stay or shop if you want modern comforts, conveniences like large grocery stores, movie theaters and 3 star hotels.

Old country lifestyle in the Azuero countryside is largely unchanged since the turn of the century. Visitors enjoy the way life slows down as if one were traveling back in time. People are friendly and prices are cheap.

Azuero Peninsula is one of the last parts of Panama being “discovered” by tourists and investors. A small roster of celebrities including Hollywood movie stars and America’s rich and famous are buying large tracts of land as nature preserves, exclusive getaways and investment. More than one upscale residential resort community and such projects are being planned. As well as more affordable residencies.
